CPU Cooling Fan And Heat Sink

A 2U server heat sink is a heat dissipation solution designed for 2U rack-mounted servers. Because the height of a 2U chassis is limited (about 88.9 mm), the heat sink must be selected with both heat dissipation performance and space constraints. The following is information and advice about 2U server heatsinks:

1. Radiator type and characteristics

- Air-cooled radiator : This is the most common 2U server cooling solution, usually in a downforce or side-blown design. Due to space restrictions, the height of the radiator is generally not more than 60mm, the size of the fan is mostly 6cm or 8cm, and the speed is higher (4000-6000 RPM), but the noise is larger.

- Water-cooled radiator : Some users try to use custom water-cooled solutions in 2U chassis to reduce noise and improve heat dissipation performance. However, water-cooled systems have certain risks in server environments, such as leakage and maintenance complexity.

- Pure copper radiator : High-end 2U radiator is often made of pure copper to improve thermal conductivity. For example, both Cool Supremacy and Tt have introduced pure copper heatsinks for Xeon processors, which support high-power cpus but are noisy.

2. Radiator selection Suggestions

- Low-power CPU : For low-power cpus with 8 cores and below (such as AMD 5600), you can choose the AM4 radiator with the owl fan to achieve quiet operation by optimizing the fan strategy (such as low speed below 60 ° C).

- High power CPU : For high power cpus (such as the AMD 5900X), it is recommended to choose a high-performance downward heat sink (such as the AXP120-X67) or a custom water cooling solution. If air cooling is selected, pay attention to the balance between fan speed and noise.

- Heat sink for servers : Some brands (such as Jynton) offer ultra-thin copper bottom side blow heat sinks for 2U servers, supporting a variety of CPU sockets (such as 115X, 1366, 2011), suitable for scenarios requiring stable 24 hours operation.

3. Balance of noise and heat dissipation

- The radiators in 2U chassis are usually noisy, especially the high speed fans (such as 5800 RPM). If you are sensitive to noise, consider the following options:

- Use low speed fans (e.g., below 2000 RPM) and optimize air duct design.

- Choose water cooling solution, but require regular maintenance to prevent leakage.

- Add an air hood or improve the air inlet design in the chassis to improve heat dissipation efficiency.

4. Precautions

- Compatibility : When selecting a heat sink, ensure that it is compatible with CPU slots and motherboards.

- Air duct design : The air duct design of a 2U chassis greatly affects the heat dissipation effect. You are advised to select a heat sink that matches the air duct of the chassis.

- Long-term operation : If the server needs to run for 24 hours, you are advised to select a heat sink with high reliability and periodically check the status of the heat dissipation system.
